DECOR... | how to decorate with white

An all white space has been my weakness  for many years. I have some kind of affinity for a white colour. Although white is a relaxing colour, sometimes it can be really tricky. Without proper design tips an all white space can resemble a hospital room - cold and unfriendly. So what can we to achieve an inviting and cosy white room?

Layers of tones

Playing with different shades of white builds up comfort and warmth. You should combine the palest shades like snow, milk or egg white with darker off-whites (cream soda, ivory or vanilla), it creates dimension. A hint of pearl or silver grey is a perfect choice.

Texture

Texture brings the room to life. Combination of different texture of similar  colours provide depth and elegance. A "must - have" here is a wool carpet, linen or silk curtains, cashmere or velvet cushions, fur blankets or leather upholstery.

Light - reflecting objects

Mirrors not only open up the space, but also they reflect light. Thanks to mirrors you achieve richness and dimension in monotone off-white spaces. A glass or crystal chandelier captures light and gives a luxurious touch. My favourite inexpensive accessories are silver candlesticks and crystal vases that enhance a white colour.

Contrasting and tone-on-tone wood

Wooden elements change the mood effortlessly and warm up the space. Different shades of earth tones should appear in the room. You can opt for dark wood (a walnut-wood floor, a rich chocolate-brown wenge coffee table) or tone-on-tone wood (a bamboo floor, bleached wood or white oak, raw wood, wooden industrial stools and tables, wooden frames)

Plants

Plants do wonder at home. They fulfil the empty space and live up dark corners. Philodendrons, Ficus, Yuccas create a great background for white furniture. I recommend timeless Orchids, Peace Lily perfect for shady places or Bromeliad for those of you who have tendency to forget about watering plants.
