Colour
Buy a rug that goes with the main colours in the room. If you can't decide, match the colour in the rug to your sofa, cushions or walls. Decide which colours express your personal taste.

Fiber
There are natural and synthetic fiber rugs. The natural fibers like: jute or sisal are affordable and easy to clean, so they are a good choice for pet owners. Moreover, their rich texture makes a statement and introduces warmth.
Wool rugs are considered to be the most luxurious and the most expensive. I recommend handmade Maroccan or Turkish rugs. They are not only famous for their unique quality and softness, but also the variety of patterns from Oriental to modern.
Polyester rugs are the most affordable option. However, polyester fibers aren't flexible and can be crashed easily. The average lifespan of polyester rugs is from 4 to 5 years.
Size
You have to remember about proportions. Too small or too big rug can destroy the final effect. In my opinion, in a lounge a rug should sit under the feet of the sofa and side tables next to it. If you want to keep the proportions in the dining room, make sure a rug creates a base for a table and chairs. In the bedroom try a runner along each side of the bed and you will have a soft spot for your feet.
If you suffer from allergy like me, don't worry ;) you can replace a rug with other decor elements.
